The Accra Marathon is Accra's premier (half marathon) event. With an AIMS certified half marathon course and close to 15,000 participants since its inception in 2015, the race route offers a a unique Ghanaian scenery showcasing the lovely monuments of Accra and other tourist attractions including the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Independence Arch, the Black Star Square and the lovely beaches of Accra. There is also a 5 kilometre race for social and lifestyle, corporate and fun runners.This attracts a colour display by fun runners with unique attire, singing and local drumming and dancing.The race starts at the Famous Freedom Arch and ends at the Black Star Square.
The Marathon has evolved into a city focused race creating awareness of healthy living and promoting sports toursim in Ghana. The Accra Marathon is run as a collaboration between the city Authority Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Millennium Marathon Sports Limited who are also the managers of the race. The company organises annual regional races in the 10 regions of Ghana prior to the international throughout the year with the introduction of a juniors race in 2016.
